Wisdom teeth, or your third molars, are the last set of teeth to form in your mouth. They usually appear between the ages of 16 and 25 at the very back of your mouth. In most cases, these molars align perfectly with the rest of your teeth. But sometimes, your wisdom teeth become impacted. Your wisdom teeth being impacted means they never properly grew through your gums. They’re either completely hidden under the gums or only partially erupted. That’s why they cause pain. Even if you don’t feel any pain, impacted teeth could eventually cause oral health problems. This includes cavities, gum diseases, and infection.
Wisdom teeth usually become impacted when your jaw doesn’t have enough room to accommodate them. Sometimes, it may be because they grew out at the wrong angle and pressed against the adjacent teeth. Either way, you can’t prevent impacted teeth. The only remedy is to remove them from your mouth.
